The St. Vincent De Paul Society is an international association of Catholic laymen engaging systematically in personal service of the poor. The society was founded in May 1833 by eight students in Paris under the leadership of Frederick Ozanam. Père Bailly, editor of the “Tribune Catholique” was its first
president.
The society was established in Canada in 1846 at Notre Dame in Montreal through the inspiration of Bishop Bourget. One of the members of that conference, George Muir, came to Toronto, and together with several members of St. Michael’s Cathedral formed a conference of St. Vincent De Paul there, on November 11, 1850.
Today in Ontario, the Society has over 4900 members in 335 conferences who each year visit over 66000 families.
Across Canada there are over 15000 members in 790 parish conferences. These Vincentians visit more than 250,000 families each year.
In 2017, on its 180th anniversary, it has 148 Councils in 140 countries and more than 780,000 members in 61,803 conferences throughout the world
Through the generosity of our parishioners and the schools in our parishes, assistance in the form of groceries and clothing, -- and in some cases, rent, utilites, dental and medical assistance-- is given to those in need.
